Integrative medicine and the cognitive elements of depression
Keywords:
Depression, Revision, Cognition, Integrative Medicine, Complementary TherapiesAbstract
Objective: To evaluate the available information on cognitive symptoms of depression and the use of therapies integrated to conventional treatments by Integrative Medicine, in order to present an overview on the subject from information published in the scientific literature. Method: In this bibliographic review (databases, websites and specialized journals) studies on the cognitive elements of depression and the use of therapies integrated with conventional treatments by Integrative Medicine were selected. The databases evaluated were MEDLINE, PUBMED, SCIENCE DIRECT, SciELO and LILACS. Results: In the selected studies on the subject, the pathophysiology of depression and cognitive symptoms and conventional treatments for depressive disorders accompanied by cognitive symptoms were described. The techniques and therapies gathered by Integrative Medicine to compose the treatment and prevention of cognitive disorders in depressive disorders were surveyed, and the evidence described in the scientific literature was presented. Conclusion: For the cognitive changes that accompany depressive disorders, the combination of conventional treatment with complementary therapies aggregated by Integrative Medicine is an option that has shown promise. There is stronger and more consistent evidence on the benefits of lifestyle interventions and mind-body therapies for cognitive disorders that accompany depression.
